St. Charles Regional Chamber promotes local shopping website

ST. CHARLES COUNTY — The St. Charles Regional Chamber is working to attract local customers to local businesses, by helping them sell their products online — a move that could boost the chamber’s profile at the same time.

The website is a partnership with Iowa-based Member Marketplace Inc. and its “Shop Where I Live” digital platform. The chamber is encouraging local businesses to sign up and sell their products — and help develop the centralized St. Charles area online shopping hub in the process.

“We can engage businesses who don’t have a brick and mortar store or retail space,” said Scott Tate, president and CEO of the St. Charles Regional Chamber. “It’s a way for us to promote local businesses and support them.”

The regional chamber pays for the site but does not make money from it, said Wendy Rackovan, spokesperson for the chamber. Merchants pay a processing fee.

So far, most of the handful of shops on the online marketplace sell clothes and accessories. But, Tate said, service-based businesses, like auto shops, could offer things like oil changes or restaurants could sell gift cards.

“It allows people to shop locally and help them look at

“Grandpa’ out of style? But not their fashion | Local News

We’ve been grandma and grandpa for 19 years. Now we’re finding out the terms “grandma” and “grandpa” may be a thing of the past.

At least that’s what some baby boomers want.

A TikTok video featured a woman who said her mother-in-law doesn’t want to be called “grandma” any more. I’m not sure, but apparently the term makes her feel old — or something.

The grandma thought maybe “Queen mother” would be more fitting. I guess that would make the grandpa “King father.”

Other suggestions rolled in, including “G-ma.”

The video quickly racked up a couple million views and plenty of people chimed in with similar stories and suggestions.

We’ve always loved being “grandma” and “grandpa” to our grandkids.

When they were little it was an endearing thing to hear. Even now when most of them are in their teens, hearing “grandpa” sounds just fine to me. It’s who I am and it’s meaningful to me. Calling me “Poppy” or “PawPaw” to help me be in denial about growing older just doesn’t make sense.

Still, I wouldn’t mind watching my granddaughters and grandsons squirm as they grow older and I insist they call me “Grand-dude” or maybe “Your Honor.”

When local businesses started to close down due to the pandemic, University of Denver student John-Paul Evans wanted to help. Three years later, Evans, who grew up in Parker, launched harvestersa website that connects shoppers to their local businesses.

While talking with an owner of a running shoe store, Evans learned that many business closures were influenced by the pandemic, but the problem started years before COVID-19.

“The issue kind of started back around 2012, 2013 when online shopping kind of took off and especially online shopping with large retailers,” said Evans.

As Evans saw that online shopping made shopping too convenient of an option compared to shopping at local businesses, he began to think of a way to make it more convenient to shop locally online and make it an easy process.

For over a year, Evans tried to make different apps and played around with websites. Through Harvester, it created a marketplace that allows shoppers to search and browse products directly from local shops.

Harvester launched in February and already has 70,000 stores on the site for shoppers across the US

“All the stores that are currently listed on Harvester are ones that already
