Goodbye, lumpy puffers and salt-caked boots. Hello, spring 2024 fashion trends! If your wardrobe is starting to feel a bit tired after months of gray skies and howling winds, you’re in luck—a new season is on the way, bringing plenty of fresh inspiration from the spring runways along with it. Nostalgia ruled last year’s biggest trends, from the revival of early-2010s fashion to so-called stealth wealth, which revisited ’90s-style minimalism. And experts say this year’s trends, like the disco decadence of sequins and the return of grade-school staples like bows and preppy polos, follow the same arc, but with a little more playfulness this time around.
So what will we be wearing this year? While you’ll still see plenty of bold red, a holdover from our favorite winter trends, on the streets, we’re expecting to go a bit darker in maroon this spring. (Don’t worry; bright blue is also trending if you’re dreaming of clearer skies ahead.) Bow accessories and rosettes are poised to get even more popular, jumping from your TikTok feed to real life. And if you’re looking for an excuse to dress a little bolder, we recommend investing in a fringed jacket, leopard-print ballet flats, or a sequined top.
“I think if prices for luxury goods continue to remain as high as they currently are, we’ll see the ‘quiet luxury’ trend stick around for a bit longer,” says Emilia Petrarca, who writes the fashion newsletter Shop Rat. “It’s just too expensive to take risks on pieces that you might not like 5, 10 years down the line. Timeless pieces are perhaps a better investment.” Still, she doesn’t think we’re headed for a year of unexciting clothes: “People are interested in trying a timeless sort of elegance or opulence, not just a boring beige minimalism that’s perhaps safer.”
Ready to get a jump on the season’s best (and most wearable) trends before the rest of the world? Fresh from the catwalk, these are the spring 2024 fashion trends our editors are most excited to wear right now, from new-school prep to the return of the statement belt. Pack away those winter coats and fleece-lined tights—mentally, we’re in May.
1. High-fashion fringe
Welcome back to the zeitgeist, fringe! While the word boho might send you on a mental trip back to 2013, fear not: Fringe is enjoying a high-fashion renaissance. At Prada the material acted almost as a sheer layer on top of short shorts; at Jil Sander it took on the appearance of feathers; at Gucci it added some bling to a burgundy skirt. So yes, it’s officially time to pull out that fringed jacket from deep storage—or start a new collection.

2. Rich burgundy
After red’s big moment in the spotlight last fall and winter, our favorite spring collections are going a little darker. Whether you call it maroon, burgundy, or oxblood, the color—the moodier sister of red—popped up on too many runways to count, meaning it’s high time to integrate it into your wardrobe. While Gucci, Valentino, and Sergio Hudson proved that burgundy looks great in a tonal outfit, you can start small with a maroon cardigan, designer bag, or pair of loafers.

3. Girlcore
Designers are just as sold on bows, rosettes, ruffles, and lace as the rest of social media. Let’s call it what it is: girlcore. It’s easier than ever to dress like you’re just leaving ballet practice, this time with the blessing of big names like Simone Rocha, Carolina Herrera, and Moschino. Style your favorite romantic dress or flouncy skirt with a floral choker and a hair bow, then go rack up some compliments. (More, in this case, is most definitely more.)

4. Athletic prep
One of our favorite 2024 fashion trends is the return of the preppy aesthetic. This one is directly tied to Miu Miu’s string of hyper-popular runways, starting a few years ago with that micro-mini pleated skirt and culminating in this spring’s Gossip Girl–esque collection. Other designers are feeling the look too and updating prep-school classics like polo shirts, track jackets, and button-down shirts with a new attitude. Now blast some Vampire Weekend and dress like you’re matriculating at Yale.

5. Statement belts
Listen, we never thought we’d say this either, but hear us out: Statement belts are hot. After about a decade in fashion jail, they were rescued this season by everyone from Ferragamo to Tom Ford, proving that a fine look can become great with the simple addition of an eye-catching accessory. Add one to a dress or a pair of wide-leg jeans the next time you’re dressing to impress.

6. Animal prints
Animal prints are all the rage once again—call it the mob-wife effect. Leopard print is currently trending with street-style influencers, and we expect its popularity to only grow. If you’re willing to venture a little further on your style safari, try tiger (like Ganni and Ulla Johnson), giraffe (like Michael Kors), or even peacock (like Rabanne). It’s easiest to try animal patterns on accessories, à la Jason Wu’s snake-print sandals, but don’t be afraid to try them on pieces like skirts, dresses, and pants.

7. Sky blue
There are blue skies ahead, according to Bottega Veneta, Staud, and a plethora of other labels. (We’ll spare you the cerulean monologue jokes.) The hue is so easy to mix into your outfits this spring, whether you go for a monochromatic look in an azure dress and matching shoes or a pop of blue in the form of a handbag.

8. Disco inferno
From Ralph Lauren’s Halston-esque lamé gowns to Kate Spade’s sequined separates, this season’s presentations went big on all things sparkly. Unleash your inner Studio 54 groupie by going big on paillettes, rhinestones, and metallic fabric—or take a note from the styling at Gucci and 16Arlington and pair your most eye-catching pieces with plain jeans, leather pants, or sweaters.
9. Peep-toe sandals
Sure, sandals are part of any spring wardrobe, but this season’s runways contained a stunning number of peep-toe styles. From classic pumps to thong sandals, there was a true consensus: You’ll need to stay on top of your pedicure game this spring.

10. Nonbasic basics
Stealth wealth is still going strong, but it’s poised to change a little in the new year. With ’90s luminaries like Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy—the late style icon and the subject of a new coffee-table book—clearly on the mood board, simple (yet glamorous) outfits are all the rage right now. “I believe we will move into an ’80s, ’90s look somewhat adjacent to quiet luxury,” says Jenny Walton, a Vogue contributor and writer of the newsletter Jenny Sais Quoi. “Someone who dressed in a very simplistic and chic manner such as Bessette-Kennedy will continue to be a big inspiration. I also think that restraint will become more and more alluring.” Get a jump on minimalism with hardworking basics like high-waist jeans and long-sleeve T-shirts.
11. Graphic stripes
Almost as an offshoot of the preppy look, high-visibility stripes are also everywhere this season. Most brands, including Ralph Lauren, Carven, and Louis Vuitton, showed them as separates—but whether you’re wearing them as a shirt dress or a relaxed sweater, they’re both effortless and chic.

12. Sheer layering
If the many, many runway presentations featuring see-through clothing—among them Dior, Chanel, Hermès, and the Prada one Walton’s been dreaming about—are any indication, expect sheer to continue its reign on and off the red carpet. You don’t have to bare it all to give the trend a try; instead, pick up a dress with a sheer skirt or transparent socks.
13. Subversive officewear
If we’re going to have to go to the office, we might as well serve a few looks while we’re there. The spring runways dovetailed nicely with TikTok’s “office siren” trend—think Gisele Bündchen’s wardrobe in The Devil Wears Prada. Nipped-waist blazers and roomy trousers are hallmarks of the look, as are skinny glasses (whether or not you actually need them).

14. ’80s excess
The first runways of the year featured some very ’80s displays of self-expression; look at Moschino’s slinky styling, Luar’s Grace Jones–esque styling, and Louis Vuitton’s ode to material girls. You don’t need to raid your rich grandma’s closet to join in—just stock up on oversized shades, even bigger blazers, and cap-toe slingbacks to bring the same over-the-top attitude to your current wardrobe.
