Warning over bogus shopping sites as scam sales surge – The Irish Times

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , , , , /

Bank of Ireland has warned consumers about a new wave of purchase scams luring unsuspecting shoppers through online ads to make payments for goods and services that subsequently turn out to be fake.

In the past year, there has been a 32 per cent increase in purchase scams reported to Bank of Ireland.

From relatively low-value items such as clothes and trainers, through to holiday home deposits and even cars, consumers are often lured by the false promise of a slashed price or a bargain.

They are asked to pay directly by sending money from their bank account to another account via bank transfer, a method that provides little protection.

Once the payment is transferred, the seller usually cuts all contact, and the product or service never arrives.

“Fraudulent advertisements online and on social media have been the subject of regular warnings for some time,” said Bank of Ireland’s head of fraud Nicola Sadlier.

“This alarming trend is not going away, even with increased awareness among the general public, and repeated calls for websites and search engines to remove the adverts. These fake ads should be caught before they are published online, but many are not.”

She stressed that it

Supermarkets head to malls like Green Acres as sites revamp, rebrand

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , , /

Exits can bring opportunities.

As retail landlords contend with filling large vacancies created by the exits of department stores, supermarkets are increasingly part of redevelopment plans to draw more foot traffic to the retail sites.

The additions of supermarket tenants often align with mall owners’ plans to redevelop struggling properties or “de-mall” them by converting them to open-air retail centers.

“In the current environment, the universe of department stores and anchors is contracting. The demand in the retail space is not to backfill them with other department stores,” said Eric Bunyan, senior vice president of leasing at The Macerich Co. The Santa Monica, California-based real estate investment trust is planning a redevelopment that will bring an 80,000-square-foot ShopRite supermarket to Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • More supermarkets are coming to malls because of opportunities created by the exits of department stores.
  • A new ShopRite is planned for Green Acres Mall, a Whole Foods Market will open in 2025 at a redeveloped site called The Shops at SunVet, and Asian grocer 99 Ranch Market opened at Samanea New York in Westbury in 2022.
  • Completion of newly built retail spaces in the United States fell to record-low

TORONTO (CNN/CTV) — A shopping app that didn’t exist four months ago might be changing the game of e-commerce, however, experts say it’s also raising concerns about data privacy risks.

Garnering conflicting customer reactions throughout Canada and the US, Temu has been making waves on social media platforms over the last two months. The one-stop-shopping service recently became one of North America’s most downloaded free apps on both the App Store and Google Play, thanks in part to its reputation of offering steep discounts on a vast assortment of products, along with opportunities for credit incentives through encouraging sign-up offers.

However, one cybersecurity expert warns that Temu, like any e-commerce app that doesn’t fall under Canadian data protection laws, could present a risk that more shoppers should evaluate.

“Within the last year or so there has been increasing concern about spying from foreign states,” Fred Nerenberg, a senior cybersecurity consultant at a Canadian security firm, told CTVNews. ca over the phone. “But when it comes to people’s data, you are

As online sales have grown during the pandemic, retailers have learned to be more persuasive.Arif Qazi/Insider;

  • Online retailers use psychological tricks and tools to get consumers to make purchases.

  • Experts told Insiders that many retailers often tap into shoppers’ fear of missing out, or “FOMO.”

  • Retailers have been deploying these tactics for over a decade. But we’re shopping even more online.

Online retailers use psychological tricks and marketing tools to get consumers to make purchases. And as online sales have grown during the pandemicretailers have learned to be more persuasive.

Companies are relying more on first-party data to build personal relationships with customers and convince them to make purchases. This data will only grow in importance as social media ads become more costly, and Internet cookieswhich help track users on different sites, are phased out.

Experts who spoke to Insider said many of the business strategies deployed by retailers tap into shoppers’ fear of missing out, or FOMO, on the latest and most popular products. Offering incentives to add more items to online carts like free shipping is another example of the psychological tricks a retailer can play.
