Adaptive fashion designers making personal style accessible

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , , /

Writer and podcaster Ardra Shephard wasn’t born disabled. She started using mobility aids in her thirties: first a cane, then a rollator, sometimes a wheelchair. Shephard searched for disabled style icons for a little fashion inspiration that would accommodate her mobility needs — but couldn’t find any. “I was frustrated and angry, actually, to discover that disabled people were being erased from the world of fashion and beauty,” she says.

Complicating this issue, change rooms are often not accessible, and shopping trips need to be planned around which subway stops have an elevator. The GTA is home to a few long-running adaptive fashion businesses, but many of their offerings skew more utilitarian than fashion-forward. While still uncommon, a few local designers have started adaptive fashion lines to create more inclusive — and chic — clothing for everyone, and that’s worth celebrating in our often-ableist society. “Adaptive fashion in Canada has come a long way,” Shephard says. “It’s exciting to see brand innovation, and that, year over year, we seem to be getting better about including disabled people in ad campaigns and in the media in general.”

The reigning queen of the adaptive fashion scene is Izzy Camilleri, who is known

The best street style from Seoul Fashion Week

At Seoul Fashion Week some of the most arresting looks were found outside the star-studded shows as attendees arrived in style.

Seoul Fashion Week is a star-studded affair, with actors and K-pop artists among the high-profile guests seen on this season’s front rows.

Some of the most interesting looks, however, could be found outside, as attendees arrived in style for runway shows across the five-day Fall-Winter 2023 schedule. Others were worn by fashion fans who showed up simply looking for an opportunity to show off their personal style.

Amid chilly temperatures in South Korea’s capital, there were plenty of structured jackets and playful knitwear on display. And there was no shortage of eye-catching outfits.

“People have great fashion sense nowadays,” said 20-year-old Lee Hyeon-seo on his way into a show on Friday. “Koreans have progressed in this field, which I think is wonderful.”

Wearing a cropped women’s jacket, Lee said he was a fan of Korean designers ul:kin and Lee Seong-dong. “They create genderless and street wear styles — that’s why I like them so much.”

Elsewhere, 33-year-old Juno Jung arrived wearing an oversized Balenciaga shirt and Acne Studio pants.

‘Japanese fashion is so free’: The best street style at Tokyo Fashion Week

See some of the bold fashion found outside the Autumn-Winter 2023 shows.

In Tokyo’s Shibuya district, fashion enthusiasts came out in droves for this month’s Rakuten Fashion Week donning a mix of brightly-colored and experimental garments.

And as brands sent their Autumn-Winter 2023 collections down runways, the street style — in a city known for its bold fashion culture — was equally deserving of an audience.

Strikingly dyed hairstyles, monochromatic get-ups and oversized trench coats were all on display outside the week’s shows. Pairs of guests arrived in coordinating outfits with matching accessories such as tinted sunglasses or perpetually versatile beret.

Some, like 22-year-old Hiroto Murotani, who goes by the nickname Hii, were not here to attend shows, despite being dressed to impress. In the area for a photoshoot, she wore an oversized bubble gum pink sweater over a red gown and black platforms.

“Fashion is a tool I use to express myself,” he said. “The most fashionable people in Japan are following their own personal style rather than (what’s trending).”

Meanwhile, Ena, who didn’t share her surname out of privacy concerns, channeled a “dreamy,

Oscar Fashion: Finding the Right Beard Style for the Red Carpet

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , , /

I was clean-shaven when I left for Palm Springs for Christmas. A few days later, I arrived back at home in Los Angeles with a beard.

I didn’t plan on my new hirsute look. I just don’t like shaving. I avoid it when I can. But as my beard grew in, my friends started telling me they liked it. They remarked at how “distinguished” it looked with its mix of ginger and white. I was worried I might appear older than I am, but my cousin insisted that she thought it actually made me look younger.

I decided to go for a trial run by keeping the beard for the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s opening night gala red carpet. I needed to see how it looked on camera. The beard was a hit. Austin Butler told me he liked it and so did Colin Farrell. A few days later at the Golden Globes, Andrew Garfield said, “The beard looks nice. The ginger and white is like a Prince Harry thing you’ve got going on.”

I decided the beard was here to stay. Yup, I’m that easy. Star-studded compliments meant new year, new beard.

But then some worry set in.

Pedro Pascal: The ‘Last of Us’ Star Is A Menswear Style Icon

Step aside, dad fashion. There’s a new menswear trend in town.

In 2023, the very best outfits seem to fall somewhere between looking vaguely paternal and experimentally maximalist. As it turns out, this stylistic niche is a gift that keeps on giving from Pedro Pascal, whose funky viral red-carpet wares are reliably reminiscent of a beloved older hip relative.

The Chilean-American actor, who stars in HBO’s The Last of Us and Disney’s The Mandalorians, has emerged as a bespectacled menswear star in recent weeks. His tendency to play father figure characters coupled with his penchant for playful knitwear, his recognizable thick retro glasses, and his comfort-first mentality have propelled him to the latest frontier of father-like dressing: the fun uncle.

Take, for instance, The Mandalorians press tour. At the show’s premiere in London on February 22, the 47-year-old sported a cropped fishnet knit cardigan partly buttoned to reveal a gray tank. He paired his top half with red voluminous waist-hugging trousers by Acne Studios and a pair of black boots. Be it the laissez-fair vibe of his
