How drag bans have made clothing a political statement, according to a queer style expert

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , , , /

She said she began working on the book six years ago, and it was originally going to be a queer style manual. But then the pandemic started, and she read an article about how LGBTQ people were unable to receive community and gender-affirming care that allowed them to live and present authentically. She pivoted the book to focus on the voices of LGBTQ people and to explore how queer people use clothing and style “as a tool for self-affirmation, as a tool for self-love and as a tool for liberation,” Vita said.

Those themes became more pronounced as she was interviewing people for the book and as state lawmakers introducing hundreds of bills targeting LGBTQ rights, including the drag legislation and bills that restrict LGBTQ-related content in schools.

For example, Van Bailey, a model who uses “they” and “he” pronouns and is featured in the section of the book dedicated to visibility, told Vita that “visual cues” help them find other queer people when they’re out and creates a sense of community.

“If I see other studs or masculine-presenting queer people on a train or out and about, I’m automatically brightening up and being like, ‘Hey, those are my people,’”

The sky is the limit for social media star Myles Sexton, who is adding a podcaster to their many roles.

It’s kinda hard to believe that Myles Sexton was once a sheltered country boy who Madonna or Cher had never heard of. “When I finally left my little town and moved to Halifax, people would ask me which one I liked and I had to say, ‘I don’t know who either of those people are,’” Sexton laughs from their airy living room in their Waubaushene, Ont., home, just steps away from Georgian Bay. “It was a bit of a culture shock because I didn’t grow up with any of that.”

HBO’s Being Mary Tyler Moore shows her style and spirit

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , , /

It’s hard to overstate the strength of the hold Mary Tyler Moore had over the culture in the 1960s and ’70s.

A new HBO Originals documentary, “Being Mary Tyler Moore,” goes a long way to returning the late icon to her proper place in the charisma canon, cementing her rich legacy of progressive television, subversive feminism and timeless style.

Moore had two major TV roles, first as America’s sweetheart, vivacious housewife Laura Petrie on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” (1961 to ’66), then as America’s first real representation of a single career woman, Mary Richards in “The Mary Tyler The Moore Show” (1970 to ’77).

As an elementary school child of a working mom in the 1970s, I had an umbilical connection to the TV and, in particular, to the repeats of these two seminal shows. Thus it was that I burst into tears a half-dozen times watching this two-hour documentary, directed by James Adolphus. The scene that resonated with the most watched Oprah Winfrey erupted into a full-on scream upon meeting Moore: Winfrey was all of us who felt Moore’s warmth, vulnerability, charm and realness melt through the cathode ray tube and into our living rooms.
