Shopify brings its Shop Pay checkout service to external e-commerce websites

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , , , , /

Shopify Inc. today announced plans to make its Shop Pay service available for online stores not hosted on its namesake cloud platform.

Shopify’s platform is used by retailers to build and manage e-commerce websites. It helped process $49.6 billion worth of online purchases last quarter, a 15% increase from the same time a year earlier. Shopify says its installed base includes millions of merchants.

Retailers with Shopify-hosted websites use its Shop Pay service to process customer purchases. It powers the checkout pages where users enter their payment information. Thanks to today’s update, large retailers will gain the ability to embed the service into e-commerce websites that are hosted not on Shopify’s platform but rather third-party infrastructure.

Shopify says the service can help retailers generate more sales. According to market research cited by the company, Shop Pay increases the number of website visitors who turn into paying customers by up to 50%. It does so by significantly speeding up the online buying experience.

Users can save their payment information, shipping preferences and related details in Shop Pay to avoid re-entering the data during every purchase. From there onwards, the service automatically inputs the data into supported websites. When making a

TikTok prepares ‘Project S’ plan to break into online shopping

TikTok is expanding its online retail offerings, with its Chinese parent company selling products through the viral video app as the group seeks to challenge rivals such as Shein and Amazon.

In recent weeks, UK users have begun to see a new shopping feature within the TikTok app called “Trendy Beat”, a section offering items that have proven popular on videos, such as tools to extract ear wax or brush off pet hair from clothing.

All the items advertised are shipped from China, sold by a company registered in Singapore that is owned by TikTok’s Beijing-based parent company ByteDance, according to filings and people familiar with the operations.

The model, similar to how Amazon makes and promotes its own range of best selling items, represents a vast shift from TikTok’s existing shopping marketplace. It currently allows other vendors to sell items through the TikTok Shop, which then takes a small commission.

By contrast, ByteDance would take all the proceeds from sales made through the Trendy Beat feature on TikTok, four people familiar with its operation said.

How the fashion of the Windrush generation shaped British style

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , /

The outfits that new Caribbean arrivals to Britain wore as they disembarked the HMT Empire Windrush – and all the other boats that followed – served as a reassurance of their sense of self.

They had left their previous home behind and, at this stage of the journey, were caught between what was familiar and unknown. For many, the outfit worn on this day was talismanic. Their clothing choices signified their respect both for themselves and for the enormous, life-changing journey they had undertaken.

Many men stepped off the boat wearing well-cut suits, partnered formally with a shirt and patterned tie. Others donned more casual, open-neck shirts with the collars worn outside the jacket, all accessorized with beret or fedoras. And there were the staples – highly polished shoes, a belt and meticulous haircut.

This article is part of our Windrush 75 series, which marks the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush arriving in Britain. The stories in this series explore the history and impact of the hundreds of passengers who were sent off to help rebuild after the second world war.

Some of the younger travelers sported distinct styles. One young man arriving on the Empire Windrush wore

Shopify’s First Shop Day Shows App-Focused Strategy Is Paying Off

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , , /

Could Shopify’s Shop Day grow to rival Amazon’s
AMZN
Prime Day as one of the top online shopping days of the year? Shopify executives certainly hope so, and the inaugural Shop Day gave them plenty of encouragement to believe that wish can come true.

Shopify is trying to convince more consumers to think of its Shop app as the go-to, one-stop destination for all their shopping needs, whether online or in-store.

It is facing new pressure from Amazon on the mobile shopping and convenience front. Amazon recently began allowing online retailers to offer a “Buy with Prime” button on their own sites that Prime members can use to get Prime shipping benefits even when not buying from Amazon.

Shopify launched the Shop app in 2020, with consumers at first using it primarily as a way to track packages. This year has expanded how merchants and consumers can use the app, and created incentives and promotions to increase the use of the app and Shop Pay, its payment platform.

On June 2, Shopify held its first Shop Day, and unveiled Shop Cash, a loyalty program
