Spring/Summer 2024 Fashion Trends

And juuust like that, another season of shows across New York, London, Milan, and Paris have come to a close. As an editor who’s been both fascinated and wiped out by the fashion month, I’m a little bummed that the hype is all over, but I’m happy we’ve got all these cool looks to anticipate. While there was a lot of newness found on the runways and at special presentations, there have also been a few trends that have come back around—but this time with an updated twist. And we like twists, don’t we?

Let’s get ready to embrace low-rise pants and micro-mini shorts (I mean, have you seen Hailey Bieber kill this look?), floor length fringe, and so. Much. More. And yeah, sure…we’ve pretty much just entered fall (and have finally accepted that fab, cold weather fashion is here to stay for a lil while), but we can still get excited for next spring and summer now, right? Why Emily Blunt’s turnip dress is part of a fashion tradition

Turnips, radishes, potatoes… This is not the beginning of Emily Blunt’s shopping list, but rather the items that appeared all over her latest red carpet outfit. Attending the Paris movie premiere of “The Fall Guy,” in which she stars, Blunt looked the picture of health — literally — in a Loewe Fall-Winter 2024 shirt and ballooning trousers smattered with root vegetables.

And while radishes rarely get a turn on the red carpet, fashion has been committed to making sure we get our greens lately. In 2022, Danish brand Ganni launched a “pop-up grow market” to celebrate their naturally dyed denim collaboration with Levi’s; where shoppers could peruse fresh beetroot alongside a mineral-dyed maxi dress of the same hue. For Spring-Summer 2020, New York based label Collina Strada not only printed tomatoes on trousers but replicated an entire farmer’s market stall for their NYFW runway — featuring donated produce attendees were encouraged to take home post-catwalk. Style icks: What would you censor in the fashion world?

As North Korea censor a pair of jeans, the Euronews Culture team ask themselves: What would we want to blur out of fashion?

When you think of 74-year-old British gardener and broadcaster Alan Titchmarsh, who helms the wholesome ITV gardening show Love Your Garden, censorship is probably not the first word that springs to mind.

Still, that hasn’t deterred North Korea’s state television Central TV, which has censored a 2010 episode of the BBC gardening programme Alan Titchmarsh’s Garden Secrets (which does sound a bit filthy, come to think of it).

The reason? His jeans.

They blurred out presenter Titchmarsh’s trousers, as jeans are seen as a symbol of western imperialism in the secretive state – and are therefore banned.

According to Seoul-based NK News, North Korea’s rules prohibiting jeans have been in place since the 1990s. Then leader Kim Jong-il declared denim trousers to be a symbol of Western – and specifically American – imperialism, which had no place in a socialist state keen on cracking down on Western culture.

It is not clear how the regime acquired the rights to Garden Secrets to air the show, but the green-fingered presenter’s denim-clad lallies are now barred.
