How Preppy Style Has Evolved Through the Decades

By avi maxwel / in , , , /

The preppy style is timeless. Cardigans, polo shirts, and Mary Jane shoes — all staples of the fashion — will never truly go out of style. American prep style has survived brand bankruptcies (J. Crew emerged from bankruptcy in 2020, per a press release from the retailer), store closures, the rise of athleisure, and hype beast trends. It has never really gone anywhere. Rather, it’s simply evolved.

From its not-so-humble beginnings in the 1890s and early 1900s to a revival in the 1980s and 1990s, it’s evident that the preppy lifestyle isn’t going anywhere. Even today, we still love preppy style — as evidenced by celebrities such as Victoria Beckham and Yara Shahidi, as well as designers like Chanel and Ralph Lauren.

Ready to take a deep dive into the preppy aesthetic? Let’s take a look at its evolution before we give you tips on how to wear the trend.

The Origins of Preppy Style

Back in the late 1890s and early 1900s, the “preppy” style was a sort of status symbol worn by wealthy guys who went to preparatory and Ivy League schools — hence the name. Brooks Brothers button-downs, knit sweaters, and loafers were all part

MILAN FASHION WEEK STREET STYLE FROM FEBRUARY 2024

1. SPLASHES OF BURGUNDY

Style Notes: Whilst in New York it was still all about bursts of vivid red, showgoers in Milan preferred to style the paintbox hue’s cooler older sister, centring their looks around deep tones of burgundy. Take this as proof that the luxurious shade is set to take over very soon.

Millennial Mom With Gen Z Style Says Generations Have Different Attitudes Toward Fashion

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , , /

  • Millennials and Gen Z are known to have different styles.
  • Influencer Krista Lavrusik told Insider that the generations think differently about clothes.
  • She told Insider that millennials take fashion criticism seriously, while Gen Z is more easygoing.

Millennials and Gen Z can’t seem to agree on much when it comes to style.

While the young generation embraces baggy, low-rise pants, millennials cling to their high-waisted skinny jeans. There’s also been debate about the “right” way to part your hair and which patterns look cool versus cringey, to list a few examples.

But these surface-level differences might point to something other than simply a difference in denim and hairstyle preferences.

Krista Lavrusik, a 37-year-old fashion creator who describes herself as a millennial mom with Gen Z style, said it actually shows that the two generations just think a lot differently about fashion.

“Gen Z doesn’t take things too personally, and I feel like millennials do,” she told Insider. “Like the whole side part and skinny jeans things — why don’t millennials try changing them and see?”

Jennifer Aniston’s Best Style Moments

By avi maxwel / in , , , /

Jennifer Aniston is one of those stars who rarely misses the mark when it comes to fashion. Her leggy, red carpet dresses consistently turn heads, her jeans and T-shirts always seem casual-cool, and her go-to wedges have sent us on our own personal shopping sprees. In short, the Emmy award-winning actress’s style can’t be beaten — and even the looks she wore in the ’90s serve as modern-day outfit inspiration.

Part of this is because when Aniston likes something, she really likes it and wears it on repeat —sometimes even for decades. Looking back at the Friends alum’s best fashion moments, we’ve realized that she sticks to the same styling hacks and tricks, which we’ve rounded up, ahead.

Keep scrolling for Jennifer Aniston’s fashion rulebook.
