Lolita style, explained: Why the Japanese-born, Victorian-inspired street style enchants women around the world

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , , , , /

CNN
 —

Ella hadn’t found a style that felt like her until a Lolita waltzed into her workplace in California’s Bay Area.

Not a “Lolita” in the Nabokovian sense, the woman was an adult dressed in Lolita fashion, a style of dress popularized in Japan in the mid-1990s and informed by the Victorian era and ornate Rococo art movement. The typical Lolita coord is unabashedly feminine, consisting of petticoats, ruffly layered dresses and delicate accessories.

Ella was transported. She’d grown up reading shōjo manga, or “girls’ comics,” and drawing art based on the Japanese countercultural styles she saw within them — the clothes, she assumed, were “very cute but unattainable” in America. She was fascinated by makeup but didn’t see herself in the “mature” looks championed by American media.

(CNN is referring to Ella by her first name only, as Lolitas can be harassed online by those who misunderstand or fetishize their practise.)

Her youthful obsession realized in front of her, Ella was inspired to buy her first piece of Lolita fashion in 2015, from the popular Lolita e-tailer Angel Pretty. She started out as a “lone Lolita” — she wore the clothes, but she didn’t know any other Lolitas.

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , /

“New Chinese Style” designs have gotten off to a strong start in 2024 after a difficult time for fashion last year. Despite the various challenges that China is facing, New Chinese Style fashion is on the upswing, with orders at factories around the country rising rapidly.

A major driver behind the trend was the latest Chinese New Year, the most important festival in China and for many a occasion to connect with traditional Chinese culture. Since Central Television’s Spring Festival Gala, sales of New Chinese Style designs have increased by 215 percent year-on-year on JD.com, and those of Hanfu (Han-style clothing) rose by 325 percent year-on-year.

In Little Red Book, the number of posts related to “New Chinese Style” reached more than 2.6 million. New Chinese Style outfits are considered one of the “three must-haves” of the Chinese New Year. Videos tagged with “New Chinese Style” were viewed more than 1.02 billion times on TikTok while sales of “New Chinese Style” fashions on Tmall last year rose by more than 50 percent year-on-year, and the market size is said to reach 1 billion consumers.

This market data show that the “New Chinese Style,” which was once jokingly called “Chinese old

“Grandpa’ out of style? But not their fashion | Local News

By avi maxwel / in , , , , /

We’ve been grandma and grandpa for 19 years. Now we’re finding out the terms “grandma” and “grandpa” may be a thing of the past.

At least that’s what some baby boomers want.

A TikTok video featured a woman who said her mother-in-law doesn’t want to be called “grandma” any more. I’m not sure, but apparently the term makes her feel old — or something.

The grandma thought maybe “Queen mother” would be more fitting. I guess that would make the grandpa “King father.”

Other suggestions rolled in, including “G-ma.”

The video quickly racked up a couple million views and plenty of people chimed in with similar stories and suggestions.

We’ve always loved being “grandma” and “grandpa” to our grandkids.

When they were little it was an endearing thing to hear. Even now when most of them are in their teens, hearing “grandpa” sounds just fine to me. It’s who I am and it’s meaningful to me. Calling me “Poppy” or “PawPaw” to help me be in denial about growing older just doesn’t make sense.

Still, I wouldn’t mind watching my granddaughters and grandsons squirm as they grow older and I insist they call me “Grand-dude” or maybe “Your Honor.”
