Will TikTok’s biggest styling hacks of 2023 work in real life? | Fashion

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , , , /

Move over, clothing hauls and unboxing videos: the growing phenomenon of videos offering unexpected, quirky or, on occasion, surprisingly practical ways of styling the clothes you already own are taking off.

A Gen Z take on “make do and mend”, these styling hack videos have blown up in 2023, taking social media by storm. On TikTok, the hashtag #fashionhacks has more than 17.4bn views, and #stylinghacks has 1.2bn. Stylists’ tips and tricks often involve reimagining an item of clothing so that it is worn upside down or back to front. Almost anything, it turns out, can be worn as a top – so long as you’re not fussed about having sleeves.

The interest chimes with the growing awareness of waste in our wardrobes. Earlier this year, a Business of Fashion report found that a “growing niche of consumers are pledging to buy fewer or no new clothes, amid growing anxiety about the climate and the cost-of-living crisis”.

So, with sartorial innovation and sustainability in mind, can these left-field social media hacks work in the offline world? I put five of 2023’s most popular hacks to the test.

30 styles for a youthful aesthetic

By avi maxwel / in , , /

Whether you’re a baby boomer just now learning of the newer generation or a millennial in a constant battle with their younger peers, one thing is for sure — Gen Z is making waves in the world of fashion and there is no way to ignore them.

This is most evident on TikTok, where Gen Z users (typically born around the late 1990s — if not the early 2000’s — through the early 2010s) are taking a stand when it comes to style. Most notably, the “Zoomers” as some like to call them, have canceled skinny jeans, to the dismay and flat-out disdain of Millennials and those who had to suffer through wide-leg gauchos and low-rise flares in their own youth.

Other cancellations include having a side part in your hair, the laughing-crying emoji and rose gold, to name a few. However, some fashion blasts from the past are back in style again according to Gen Z. This list includes skinny baguette handbags and platform shoes from the early ’90s, biker shorts from the 80’s, crew necks from the 60’s, and even pearl

Five ways to protect yourself while online shopping

Business Reporter: Yubico

Over the holiday period, many of us purchase gifts for friends and family, bringing a vital boost to retailers. Much of this is done online: 96 per cent of people planned to shop over the internet between October and December, according to a survey conducted by OnePoll for Yubico, a leading provider of multi-factor authentication.

While this is undoubtedly convenient for time-pressed consumers, online shopping also leaves them open to significant risk from cyber-criminals. Around 90 per cent of all cyber-attacks are a result of stolen login details, often gleaned through the use of phishing, where victims are tricked into visiting malicious websites via text or email and inadvertently revealing their passwords or downloading malware. Hackers can access online accounts to steal payment information and make fraudulent purchases, while the use of duplicate passwords across multiple accounts means other sites used by a victim could also be breached.

Faced with these threats, survey results find that 82 per cent of Americans and 78 per cent of Brits are concerned about cyber-security when it comes to their online accounts. However, many are left wondering where to start when it comes to

Style isn’t as simple across the pond: Differences in college fashion culture

By avi maxwel / in , , , , , , , /

Fashion is universally known as the gateway to the heavens of creativity. Every culture, nation and city has its own spin on what is considered “stylish.” The casual comfort Americans prioritize in fashion vastly contrasts the elegant class displayed in European outfit choices.

In particular, Europeans and Americans each claim superiority in style. Since I started studying abroad in London this past semester, I’ve found the real place where fashion matters: on their university campuses.

Since the rise of the fashion industry in the 19th century, Europeans are credited as the creators of a multitude of luxury brands such as Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci and Prada. Their reputation embodies sophistication and elegance, no matter where their destination is. Many European universities and student common areas are filled with blazers, sweaters, trousers and a plethora of accessories to complete each look. Europeans take their outfit choices seriously, and first impressions matter most.

In the United Kingdom, the way people dress often has to do with the British class system. Inherited and generational wealth is a sign of social status and often comes with many perks, such as a cultivated wardrobe. Furthermore, it’s uncommon to see many British students on campus
